Biomimicry Bushcamp

Regenerative. Resilient. Revitalising.

Situated in the Garden Route Biosphere Reserve, this bushcamp is designed with biomimicry principles to offer an immersive experience.

Located just outside Plettenberg Bay, the Biomimicry Bushcamp is nestled on a forested wetland island in the Bitou Valley.  The space holds stillness, the song of sunbirds, splashing of waterfowl, blink of fireflies, and the adorable antics of turacos through the milkwood canopies.  It offers surrounds for quietening the mind.

As part of the Cape Floristic Kingdom - the smallest yet most diverse of the world's six floral kingdoms - this region offers vast panoramic vistas, macroscopic intrigue, alluring Afromontane forests and rich coastal encounters arising from the meeting of two oceans – the Atlantic and the Indian.  The landscape holds secrets of human origins and ancient cultures  – lives long gone but with stories still living on in sediments and signs of things seen and unseen.  The power of these places awakens innate curiosity: what more is still out there to discover?  How does this help us re-member our kinship with earth?

The bushcamp is an ideal setting for exploring these questions and connections. It is designed to be an integral part of this landscape in ways that both enhance your experience and the nature around you.

Uniqueness

The Biomimicry Bushcamp is available for Masiyembo training courses, workshops and customised groups on request. This is due to the sensitivity of the surrounding environment and the necessity for those visiting the space to learn how to become a positive part of the continued healthy functioning of this ecosystem.  With this appreciation and understanding, visitors have a much richer experience as a 'migratory species', passing through for a period of time, treading lightly, and dropping into the flow and harmony of the web of life.

Food for your meals is prepared by our Bush Chef using locally grown vegetables and meals will be enjoyed around a campfire with lighting from solar lamps.

Our luxury safari-style tents have been specially designed to suit the local environment and weave into the fabric of nature.  Their organic shape blends into and reflects the forest canopy while perching on mobile decks, thus preventing damage to the vegetation on the forest floor.

Each tent site (maximum of two tents per site) has its own ablutions. We incorporate bush bucket showers with water heated on the fire. Used water is then harvested and filtered through charcoal filters which, as it evaporates, provides the cooling system that sustains the camp.

The toilets have been developed using biomimicry principles that ensure that there is no water wastage; that all waste produced is turned into a resource, and that mainly locally available and abundant resources are utilized.   The organic matter is broken down into compost using sawdust as the base component in a dry flushing and odourless toilet.  The waste is later removed and used in a local nursery site as compost for saplings that will later become part of a Greater Knysna Forest regeneration project.
